In a DayDream

I'M LISTENING TO PANDORA a few weeks back and this song comes on. I can't get it out of my head. So I download it on Spotify and I keep playing it over and over and over. Something about the beat, the rhythm...I don't know what it is. I think I've found this great new hit until I send it to a couple of musical friends and one of them sez..."wait, that song is 20 years old...one of my friends knew one of the band members in Chicago." Wut!? Turns out the Freddie Jones Band was from Chicago and In a Daydream debuted at #27 in September 1994. None of the band members was actually named Freddie but instead was made up of Wayne Healy, Marty Lloyd, and Jim Bonaccorsi who all met in high school. You can read more about the band here but the cool thing about the song is the way the lead is played. Its based on a dotted 1/8th note delay, similar to the way The Edge plays many of U2's songs (think Bad or Where the Streets Have No Name). Basically a loop like a lot of guitars play today (dive in deeper here). But if you listen a little closer you'll pick up the the slide guitar that subtly comes across in the background. Spectacular. And...if none of that works for you...just let the song take you away. You can really ride off in a daydream just on the rhythm and melody. Like one of the comments on the (really bad) original video...

In 1997 I was 16 and driving to Mt. Rushmore from Minneapolis with my whole family sleeping in the car. It was a hot summer afternoon and we were deep in flyover country. The blue sky surrounding me just felt so vast and boundless. I leaned forward to try and soak it all in. Suddenly I began to feel high from just the beautiful setting alone. The radio was only picking up some weak and distant station but the most beautiful melody was trying to come through the airwaves. All I could make out were the words "Already in, in a daydream 🎶" and of course that gorgeous percussive guitar solo which kept fading in and out of clarity. This single melodic chorus echoed through my head for a good ten years until YouTube came along and I finally found the song.

I love how catchy the rhythm and melody are.
