I was listening to my playlist recently and an old Nanci Griffith song came up...Once in a Very Blue Blue...that I hadnt heard in a long time. I've had that on my 'to learn' list for a while but was more determined this time and finally added it to my setlist. That led to also learning Deadwood and then in searching for the final chords I ran across a post that she had recently passed away at 68 (August 2021). I was surprised at how much this affected me...she has been such an inspiration for my music over the years. A gifted songwriter, but a brilliant storyteller as evidenced best on her One Fair Summer Evening album recorded live in Austin, Texas. In addition to her originals she played many covers to celebrate the other gifted songwriters she knew and always gave credit each time she played. Blue Moon was written by Patrick Alger and Deadwood by Eric Taylor (who she was once married too). Listen to her telling of that poignant tale of the mistreatment of the original stewards of our land. Really sad that she will no longer be making music with us.
